AI-native code editor built in Rust by the creators of Atom and Tree-sitter. 1.0 GA released April 30, 2026. Differentiators: GPU-accelerated performance (2x faster startup, 16x lower memory vs VS Code), best-in-class real-time CRDT multiplayer collaboration, and creator of the Agent Client Protocol (ACP) adopted by JetBrains, Google, and OpenAI. ~80K GitHub stars, hundreds of thousands of daily active developers, $42M total funding (Sequoia-led Series B).

Zed positions as the AI editor control plane rather than just another AI IDE. The ACP enables any agent (Claude Agent, Codex, OpenCode, Gemini CLI) to operate inside Zed, creating an agent-agnostic editing environment. Zed for Business (May 2026, $30/seat/month) adds org-wide governance controls.

Best fit: Teams prioritizing editor performance (120fps rendering), real-time multiplayer collaboration (single-click pairing), developers seeking AI model flexibility (BYOK + local models via Ollama). Not ideal for: Regulated enterprises requiring SOC 2/compliance certifications (planned but not yet delivered), teams heavily dependent on VS Code extension ecosystem, organizations requiring centralized audit logging.

Adoption & Proof Points

  • Funding: $42M total ($32M Series B led by Sequoia, August 2025). Angels include Dylan Field (Figma), Tom Preston-Werner (GitHub).
  • GitHub: ~80K stars (growing from 78K in April 2026), 1,376+ contributors.
  • 1.0 GA released April 30, 2026 — formal stability milestone.
  • Active developers: Hundreds of thousands daily. Agent Metrics: 2M sessions, 15.4M turns, 536 distinct agents in 90 days (Apr 2026).
  • Used by: Anthropic, Linear, Ramp, Shopify.
  • Ecosystem: ACP adopted by JetBrains, Google, OpenAI. GitHub Copilot GA. ChatGPT subscription provider. DeepSeek V4 support.
  • Pricing: Free tier. Pro $10/month. Business $30/seat/month (May 2026). Enterprise custom.
  • Zed for Business launch (May 2026): org-wide governance controls now available.
  • 1.0 HN reception: 1,172 upvotes, 378 comments — strong community momentum.

Risks & Limitations

  • Agent reliability (Medium-High): May 2026 improvements shipped (edit tool on-disk resilience, terminal consistency, token efficiency, streaming performance), but prior pattern of session freezes, infinite loops, and uncontrollable agent behavior not confirmed fully resolved. subagent_model setting added. 90-day sustained reliability track record not yet established.
  • Compliance certification gap (High): Zed for Business adds RBAC and org-wide data policies, but SAML, SCIM, and SOC 2 are roadmap items only. No audit logging. Cannot pass regulated-industry compliance reviews today.
  • Ecosystem gap: Extension ecosystem significantly smaller than VS Code (50K+ extensions). Missing GitLens, Docker management panels, database clients, full Vim bindings. Python LSP slower than alternatives.
  • Revenue model still early: Business tier launched May 2026 at $30/seat/month. No disclosed revenue. B2B sales motion still developing.
  • Collaboration trust: Multiplayer collaboration proxied through Zed servers with limited audit trail. No self-hosted option for collaboration infrastructure.
  • Subagent nesting depth-1 only: No recursive delegation. Material limitation for complex multi-agent workflows.

Capabilities & Integration

Agentic depth: Full agent panel with background operation, codebase search without pre-indexing, multi-file edits in unified diff, terminal command execution with confirmation gates. spawn_agent enables parallel subagents with own context windows. subagent_model setting for explicit model control. Headless mode for programmatic AI operation without GUI (CI/CD). Container Use for sandboxed parallel background agents. Agent profiles: Write, Ask, Minimal + custom profiles. Rules files (AGENTS.md) for repeatable prompts. Panel layout switcher (classic/agentic) and LSP code lens added May 2026.

Agent reliability improvements (May 2026): Edit tool resilient to on-disk file changes, terminal tool --no-pager/GIT_EDITOR consistency, reduced token usage, streaming tool call performance.

Edit prediction (Zeta): Open-source model (Qwen2.5-Coder-7B based) predicting rewrites based on cursor history. Self-hosted edit predictions available. Free: 2,000/month, Pro: unlimited, Business: unlimited.

Model support: Claude Opus 4.6, GPT-5/5.4, Gemini 2.5 Pro/Flash, DeepSeek V4-Pro/Flash, ChatGPT subscription, OpenCode Go, local models via Ollama, Amazon Bedrock (1M context always), Vercel AI Gateway. BYOK supported. Vercel v0 removed (deprecated).

Agent Client Protocol (ACP): Open standard for agent-editor interoperability. Adopted by JetBrains, Google, OpenAI. Enables Claude Agent, Codex, OpenCode, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot (GA) to operate natively inside Zed.

Native Git: staging, commits, branches, blame, file history, tree view, Git Graph (remote support). Split diff in agent/file diff panels. Native devcontainer support. Built-in debugger (DAP). Remote development (SSH, WSL, Docker). Windows fully supported (DirectX 11 backend) with all extensions and AI features.
